Orion,
Sydney and Tokyo’s railway lines resemble each other.
They radiate from the central line to the north, west and south;
commuters constantly transfer from train to train.
In Sydney, the silver trains are round and double-deckered,
their seats spaciously arranged. From Seaside central station I take the yellow line west for thirty minutes.
Suburban trains provide a rapid service, after which they slow.
I pass through all the small stations at a satisfying speed, arriving at a bright suburban station.
At the front there’s a modest mall with bookshop, camera shop, convenience store and
ramen restaurant.A week ago, the temperature reached forty degrees
and the blue-line commuter train going south was derailed.
Nine people died. Fifteen people were badly injured. It hasn’t rained.
Dust rises, leaves crinkle
on trees lining the road.
Summer’s clouds float in a blue sky; sometimes it becomes overcast,
then the sun comes out again. The institution is built like a fairy-tale castle.
When I go through the welcoming blue door, a slope descends inside glass,
circling the colonnade. In the midst of sunlight
smiling shopkeepers offer greetings.
One chicken burger and a cappuccino.Looking down through the window, the garden’s row of cypresses continues forever.
Black pigeons peck breadcrumbs. There’s a bench between the trees.
I follow the sloping walkway down,
moving outside and through the cypress trees.Even when I cross the pavement past the lawn’s roundabout
there is still the straight avenue of trees.
The soughing wind is pleasant.
But the road is suddenly closed by a grey iron fence,
finishing in a circular plaza. There’s a gleaming bench in the plaza, which has been placed
as if to offer a view of natural forest and grain fields.
Every day there are children here who pass from the world.
A faint smell of disinfectant wafts.
It is always from the north that the sun shines.(Orion is angrily upturned
crossing the equator in February,
where silently, in the southern hemisphere, it is summer’s height.
