The Palms of Ocoa1

We walked straight like
those who know the way,
following the flight of the
Indian’s arrow, wild for heaven
through that sweet,
eternal corridor of a country.
But now it comes:
a call, hands are clapping.

They are the palms of Ocoa,
borne on the wind,
they’re women on foot, tall
like straightened cries,
at the hour when they’ll fall,
in the month when they’ll be stripped,
and those left over are filling the air
with a hard, dry lament.
They are wounds that bleed
honey from open flanks,
and the air is utterly fervent
and sweet and Nazarene,
because of the speared queens
who we breathe and do not see.

As we walk we breathe them,
woman, Indian, deer,
and the three of us grieve for them
with different loves and sorrows.
He who knows the most is the Indian;
he who hears best, the deer;
and with these young ones I try,
through their grace, to understand.

Palmas de Ocoa

Recio caminamos como
los que llevan derrotero,
según volaba la flecha
del indio, loca de cielo
por el país que parece
dulce corredor eterno.
Pero va llegando ahora
un llamado, un palmoteo.
Son las palmeras de Ocoa
lo que se viene en el viento,
son unas hembras en pie,
altas como gritos rectos,
a la hora de ir cayendo
en el mes de su saqueo,
y las demás dando al aire
un duro y seco lamento.
Y son heridas que manan
miel de los flancos abiertos,
y el aire todo es ferviente
y dulce es, y nazareno,
por las reinas alanceadas
que aspiramos y no vemos.
Caminamos respirándolas
la mujer, el indio, el ciervo,
y llorándolas los tres
de amor y duelo diversos.
El que más sabe es el indio;
el que oye mejor, el ciervo;
y yo trato en estos hijos
por gracia de ambos, sabiendo.
