BirdsBengal’s year begins in April, so
it is quiet in this January suburb of Kolkata.
The invitation had come from an old friend,
who met me at the airport. I told him
I’d had two in-flight meals of curry.
When I wake in the dormitory,
a bird flies to the lattice
of the colonial-style windows
as if wondering “who is this visitor?”
The bird sees the scattered contents of my suitcase.
Beside the toilet, a hand shower
and a large bucket and scoop.
Luckily, I’d brought two rolls of toilet paper.
Dawn sun enters the room.
West Bengal sun enters the room.
A man walks gracefully beside the dormitory’s pond.
A man walks gracefully beside the tennis court.
In their own way, people live without thinking that
this privileged life is especially strange.
Another bird comes.
It lands elsewhere.
Inviting the other. Clearly
inviting the other.
The first bird is confused, as if wondering what to do.
With a restless,
nervous air it drifts into the room.
But, in the end, it succumbs to the invitation.
And the first bird,
sticking close to the second, leaves.
And in this welling-up January
they fly off into the distant sky.
