Sit at the angled wooden desk in the studio. Select a fragment and place on centre of page. Outline the irregular shape, draw the pattern. Note the colour of glaze and where/when it was found. Fill the sketchbook with time. Return shards to the red and yellow earth.

Spring frost. Crunch across frozen grass. Sit near the hawthorn, drawing the shortcuts of kangaroos across the Common. Keening of yellow-tailed black cockatoos in the pines.

The kindness of strangers. Leeks from the garden of the letter-cutter. A phial of alluvial gold flakes for our baby daughter from the painter.
