Hardcore Pastorals: Poems by Rebecca Hawkes

II.
damn this placid cud-chewing country
hardly redeemed by its charming panoramas
and dubious claims to purity
but if there’s one thing we can agree on it’s here
we appreciate the babes
admiring the taut velveteen heft
of an unmilked mammary
ohoho yes here they come
sashaying down the lane
ladies ladies ladies ladies
the ewes curvaceous
yet nimble as thunderheads
the heifers such noble slatterns
dignified curious eyelash-batters
blissed out with blessed estrus
hustling the paddock for clover
chewing cud like verdant bubblegum
and humping each other gladly
all the livelong day
