The Eye Doctor



looked into his ophthalmoscope and said:

“You’ve stared at the receptionist too long.

The trauma you suffered some years ago

has finally begun to heal,

and you don’t think of it as often.” 
We were living in a time when

from the store you could buy new eyes

if you were tired of your nightmares

which was another name for points of view 
or ears, if you didn’t like what you heard.

I had acquired myself some new hands

after the fortune teller at the mall

read my palm. 
The ophthalmic drops dripped along the window

as I tried to see into my future

with the brain that formerly belonged

to the eye doctor locked in the closet.

katsoi oftalmoskooppiinsa ja sanoi:

“Olet tuijottanut vastaanottoapulaista liian kauan.”

Joitakin vuosia sitten kokemasi trauma

on vihdoin alkanut parantua,

et ajattele sitä enää niin usein.” 
Elettiin aikaa, jolloin kaupasta

saattoi ostaa itselleen uudet silmät,

mikäli oli kyllästynyt painajaisiin

joita myös näkökulmiksi kutsuttiin 
tai korvat, jos ei pitänyt kuulemastaan.

Olin hankkinut itselleni uudet handut,

kun kauppakeskuksessa ennustaja

oli lukenut kädestäni. 
Silmätipat valuivat pitkin ikkunaa,

yritin nähdä tulevaisuuteen

aivoilla, jotka ennen kuuluivat

komeroon suljetulle silmälääkärille.
