after John Cage’s A Lecture on Nothing
under the fluorescent supermarket light

we gaze at the bananas

with our arms around each other

we are not married and it’s

a pleasure

to stand still

to not be going to a gym

or getting a foot in a door

or climbing the rungs of a ladder

to not be planning a career

or Going Further in a

Ford Focus

we are getting nowhere

right now

and it’s a pleasure

to never want these things

to lie down on one of the shelves

of pillows in the Home Section

and think

this is not our beautiful house
