Shirley O Lua

Shirley O Lua earmed a Doctor of Philosophy in Literature, De La Salle University, Manila, 2001. She has lectured in mass communications at Far Eastern University, Manila, 1991—1996, was assistant professor department literature at De La Salle University, 1996—2001 and associate professor department literature since 2002. She is involved with the Women Playwrights International, Philippine Center International Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists association and the Modern Language Association.

PHILIPPINES Editorial

To enter the mind of Philippine literature in English, it is important to note the evolution of English in the Philippines. We were colonised by Spain in 1521 and sold to America in 1898. According to eminent Filipino poet and scholar, Gémino Abad, Philippine poetry in English only took flight in the 1920s – it is a considerably young poetry, being less than a hundred years old.
