Seeing Ones

Stand self-consciously across the horizon line to be
human or -made.
The living initiate can illude a stillness,
while the inanimate has no say
in its matter, its onward creep, falling off its own ledges
on to lower ones.
When my father was younger than I am now
as we walked up the mountain with our sandwiches
he told me on the way up to doff and defer
to the man on his way down no matter
what kind he was.
