Paradise I: Sunday

This Sunday, only the choir come to church
They sing Samoan-heavenly as only a Samoan choir can
Where are the parishioners?
Swept up in the Second Coming?
Trotting towards the separation of the sheep and the goats?
Where are the parishioners?
Ignoring the screams of the toddlers
tied to the by the ankle to their bedposts?

There they are slaving over the cooking of Jesus’ flesh
And there you are, Aunty Fale, so old now
We worship you because you as still as big as Jabba the Hutt
Look how we flail
Look at us naked at your feet in our golden bikinis suffering for the kingdom of God.

God, what happening to Filipo last night at the siva?
What happened and why was his face cut open with a broken bottle?
And will he go to heaven for that?

Jesus, please bless the pig smoking in the ground
And bless Aunty Fale, and please bring her to heaven soon, Lord
Soon, Oh, Lord we beg you
To relieve us of our suffering
Amene
Amene.
