What would have been
the poem for youhas become an
over-riding senseof the day – taking it
for granted, as one does, with its drives, its houses,
its office – all thenon-specifics by which
looking back, ahuge sun-lit series
of changing moodslike grooved flat space
becomes a bare plain,a wide riverless upland
under a lowering skywhich might be precipitation
threatened or passing overor a storm building its
folding and unfoldingcabbage-leaves flung into
measureless altitudein some dream
mountains. Cabbage, that is,and acanthus. And
the mountains? Are theymountains? Yes, the ones there….
The ones which ripple upconfused with cloudbands,
bulging across the skylinelike wadding or
insulation bats comingloose in a roof. The
mountains areboth barrier and
points of escape, whethergoing into them or over them,
offering their sublimes ofamethyst depth (sunset)
and exhilarating breath-inhaling sunrise
salutations ofviewpoints (views where
we linger as if first lightwill never shift, as if the
aquarium of specimenswill never empty, the ground
never be fullyexposed); or they’re
the promise of acountry farther on, which
must be better, moreriverine, calm beyond
words or exclamation –a “sea-change” valley
where black swans floatlike silhouettes on
permanent silver wateroverhung by paperbarks
whose boughs aremirrored in shallow
translucences whileacross the fence ginger-
toned cattle trundlethrough deep grass, plantain,
burdock and reed clumps,leaving overhead
a few inland pelicansto anchor their
beaks and gulletsway across in the blue. Having
crossed the mountains, there it is – beyond thought
and desire. That said, this is a day brimmed
with both those things –impulses, wordless concepts –
too many thoughts to thinkand aching desire and not just
mountains, frustrations,plangent memory: all the
elements of the everydaymind. I know no
moment free of themonce I have left
rare meditational calmwhich is a brief, settled
state (how to stay there?)even though, when in it,
I can hardly get upto open or close a window
or switch on a fan andit renders boiling an
egg an impossibility.2
Your poem is no egg.
Perhaps, though, it isa smidgen or diminishing
imperceptible degreecloser to one than
any act of languagewhich somehow must
carry unbearably complexfeelings, intangible
depths of response andan agreed way to think
and behave —all out of order with
the intrinsic simplicity(yes, I’m talking about
love again – really, yes – )which shines through
every moment ofreflection on loss or joy.
Perhaps, rather, on theirmemory where it would
be good to get the connectorbetween them: there would be
no drift, there would becertainty in the system
and an adequate balanceof information: night-fall,
bird-twitter ceasing, therise of cicadas and frogs
like a border or fringeholding an instant darker
world together, neither sadnor ecstatic. Did the egg
hatch just now? didancientness and its im-
measurable swathe of timeallow the instant to drift
apart like the continentsare said to have done,
trapping each of usin a few molecules swept
nowhere in surf, glitter, dust?Good to be at one with them,
to bless them and be blessed.3
I work all day and in
the night – at last it’s come, cooler, not too heavy, almost
free of worry – I stay up toadd some words about the
stillnesss of a down-hangingbranch of flowering
lemon-scented gum –it dangles over the
back verandahbeckoning gliders and
possums to their mutuallove of mouth and blossom,
nectar and shoot, theirleap, screech, squeal –
a pure ease with vacancyout there beyond the
tree’s glimmering net.Across the gorge a shooting-
star goes down behindthe mostly patchy range whose
fires were months ago:the star glitters a second,
two seconds, being debrisor satellite or some meteoric
flotsam, through leavesand powdery flowers
outlined looming in the dark.Alone, the poem’s climbed that
rock-strewn, twig-charred slopefinding its well-watered land. It’s
for the future. It feels.
