Maggie Shapley

Maggie Shapley is the University Archivist at the Australian National University and lives in Canberra. She won the 2003 ACT Writers Centre Poetry Award and was included in the anthology The Best Australian Poetry 2004 (ed. A Lawrence, UQP). She has had poems published in ACTWrite, Blast, Block, the Canberra Times, Kalimat, Muse, Poetrix, Westerly and through Poetry in ACTION on Canberra buses in 2007, 2008 and 2010. She travelled to Korea in 2007 with assistance from ArtsACT.

She grabs my hand and drags me through the gate, the flow of foreign words only later understood: ‘This way, the food is free for Buddha’s birthday – pay-back time for monks’. We eat another lunch to satisfy her generosity …
