Josef Tomáš

Josef Tomáš was born in Czechoslovakia in 1933. He graduated in mechanical engineering from the Technical University, Prague, in 1957, and worked in teaching and research positions until 1968, when he emigrated to West Germany to take up an Alexander Humboldt Scholarship. In 1970–71 he taught at the University of Florida. Returning to West Germany, he worked for Volkswagen (1971–76), and after moving to Australia was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at RMIT (1976–93). From 1993 until his retirement in 2010, Tomáš was director of an engineering company in Melbourne.

Jiří Orten (1919–1941) and Vladimír Holan (1905–1980) are considered today to be among the central figures in twentieth-century Czech poetry.
