Fabric markets/ piñatas hanging on the side of buildings/ chilli and bean eggs on the terrace/ the idea of a neon memory/ Yusef Komunyakaa across from me at dinner/ in a smart jacket chatting to Carolyn Forché/ they are grand masters/ tomorrow we will visit the home of Frida Kahlo/ red wine and cactus spirits/ tomorrow we’ll see the soft place Frida fell when the pain was all too much/ was love her greatest pain/ I think/ on the way to my reading I passed three churches with their doors wide open/ pews exposed/ wooden ribs/ you can learn the science of people who just talk/ alongside people who just act/ there is a bright line/ everybody says yes/ but only some people move/ this is the festival circuit/ a made place we think up collectively/ breezily/ stone house/ blue crown/ machete.
