Imperfect Growth: a Travel Log

Avondale Heights, Auckland

You knock on the door for the hundredth time, only this time your children are waiting outside.
I’m going to get a key cut for you tomorrow.

I open the door and you’re smiling.

A big smile. My smile.

I’ve booked us all tickets to see The Lion King at LynnMall this afternoon.

Behind your smile you’re hiding seven hours of getting the boys ready for soccer, driving to far flung muddy fields, standing at different sidelines chanting their names.

I walk down the steps behind you. I can see them talking to each other in the car.

The horizon is vast.
