River Gammon

River Gammon is an artist and writer living in Naarm on unceded Wurundjeri land. He is interested in building alternative forms of cyberspace, and has a particular focus on how queerness is expressed online. When he's away from the computer, he enjoys birdwatching and urban sketching around his local neighbourhood.

An Internet for Bugs

The corporate web is seamless, shiny, slippery. Feeds slide effortlessly downwards, videos play automatically, not even a finger touch is needed to begin a swirling of sight and sound. Social media plays itself. Every little button, every swipe and tap is designed to be as smooth as possible. The Instagram feed mesmerises me: the robots know my hobbies, desires, anxieties—they present me a perfect curation of ideas, experiences, products. I have become an equation of commercial viability.
