Sunset Oil

By | 14 August 2026

I’m walking the dogs
Across the intersection at Tugun
Bathed in the fleeting syrup
Of a cocktail-coloured sun
The Shell service station signage
And the yellow arches of McDonald’s
Are glowing in the low-rise light
Koda and Leia are side-by-side
Behaving well on the lead
Their coats, smooth as coffee
I find myself transfixed
The palm trees, too, are captivated
Fast food, petrol and headlights
Somehow more beautiful than stars
