Fourth grade was when I learned gums

were more than just for chewing.

Her name was Claire,

she showed me how to chew my gum

before it loses taste, carefully, carefully,

wound it with your tongue and blow

like you’re whistling for the first time.

She gave me two of them, and opening,

my eyes still on hers, I learned

to taste want before seeing it.
