Extract: Is Canberra a Metonym?

Over the Moon

We are over the moon
’s reactionary light

in the scorched-earth
comments fields

below, and in poems
that say nothing of

the dark. We are over
the sun’s hegemony.

We are over the binary
of tidal motion between

black and white, left
or right, and the brazen

rainbow’s ubiquity
in the body corporate

’s self-promotion. We
are over manufacturers’

market certainties, and
we are over the gross

and tare of white goods
deliveries. However,

in another light, we
are not over the leer

and shirtfronting of
knights and dames,

nor the lead pencil
sketches of Monaros,

GT Falcons, the beam
of their headlights on

air-freshener empties;
nor the turnover of land

denial, the eruption of
casualisation and the

storeys upon storeys
of Evolution and co.’s

development into outer
suburbia, hinterland,

space. We are over the
furious obsolescence

of clouds. We are over
fire’s full animal self-

annihilation and the
stethoscope’s wire-tap

enthusiasm. We are
over Higg’s bosun

clogging arteries
and countermanding

football fixtures. It’s
a blunt trauma story

of Shackleton’s crater’s
mooted lunar water

bonanza, the faux
obeisance of debt

collectors acquiring
drop by drop of any

dissenting creature’s
blood allowance for

daring to collectivise,
start an ‘insurrection’,

rather than the ruin
of state and crown

and the bill we owe
this burnt blue punnet.
