Return Scene

By | 6 November 2026

a year ago it was summer, & we thought
it always would be summer
they don’t tell you this, because it changes
nothing

we park on the footpath outside my old house
step outside & survey the street for a threat

once we imagined it as an event
a go-bag, a house in the country
language of apocalypse –
the fantasy that the world will end before you

stay long enough to find fuel, we say
shower, reckon with the present

remember what we still have
mangoes, migraines, rent
those that keep
together, those that can teach us
