Jawbreaker

By | 6 November 2026

I started speaking Tamil again after fifteen years
When I say things
the words don’t sound right
and I can feel my Amama’s hand at the back of my head even though she is long gone.
Redness fills my mouth.
I put the glass down to find a large chunk missing.
I call my mom
I tell her I’ve swallowed some glass
I try to tell her in Tamil, but I feel stupid so I say it English
She tells me to say it in Tamil anyway
Ama, I ate glass and it feels like butter
No, that can’t be right
Ama, I ate glass and it feels bad.
