This is a collaboration with Queensland poet Angela Gardner. I sent gestural drawings to Gardner, and she responded with words. I put the words on a costume. We had a back and forth exchange in this fashion. I didn’t always understand her poems. One time, I pointed to some words and asked what they meant. She pointed to a bunch of scribble and asked what it meant. At that moment I understood words as gesture.

Nicci Haynes is a visual artist whose roaming practice includes print, drawing, mad-scientist installations and awkward little videos, which are variously brought into service as vehicles for her explorations. With language and communication difficulty as a recurring theme the work often finds itself in the company of poetry. Haynes currently works in the Printmedia and Drawing Workshop at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia
