Wakewords | shredded paper, A2 with variable extension to floor | 2009 | photograph by Stuart Hay
Those works on the previous page respond to my own sensations of writing but were also provoked by James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, which attracted me because of its apparent unintelligibility, and because of the inspirational message I got from Microsoft Word just before my Word copy of FW crashed (see image next page).
The broken grids and fraying bits and pieces relate to the broken writing and peculiar structure of Finnegans Wake. In both, the whole of Finnegans Wake is arranged to fit on an A2 page.
