An Almond Tree in Bloom
In a small rural town of Ohio,

I got to know a woman who told me:

My older sister lives in Ireland and my younger sister lives in New Zealand.

The woman, who ran an organic farm producing vegetables and fruit

sold vegetables and fruit on Saturdays at the Farmers’ Market.

Her skin was almond-coloured, her vegetables were always fresh.

I told her that my son lives in Toronto and my daughter in New York,

while I live in Seoul.

A love triangle……

The woman laughed, saying that distance was not something to be sad about.

Even if it’s hard to see their faces

the greater the distance, the greater the love triangle, she said.

The water and the moon are one in every continent.

As in Ven. Manhae’s “The Measure of Love”?

or in John Donne’s “Forbidding Mourning”?

Wisdom is produced in fields.

The woman had buried her husband in the ground

her parents had become stars in the sky

and as a result the love triangle had grown bigger.

She said the sea is the colour of jade one day and grey the next,

so she did not know what colour love might be.

The yellow broom bushes were blooming gloriously.

She had almond-hued eyes

that had seen a host of love balloons bursting.


꽃피는 아몬드 나무
오하이오 주 작은 농촌 마을에서

언니는 아일랜드에 살고 동생은 뉴질랜드에 산다는 여자를

알게 되었다,

야채와 과일 등 유기농 농장을 하는 여자는

토요일이면 파머스 마켓에서 야채, 과일을 팔았다,

여자의 피부는 아몬드 빛, 야채는 늘 싱싱했다,

나도 아들은 토론토에 살고 딸은 뉴욕 주에 살고

나는 서울에 산다고 말했다,

러브 트라이앵글……

여자는 웃었다 먼 거리를 슬퍼하지 않는다

얼굴 한번 보기 어려워도

거기가 멀어질수록 러브 트라이앵글이 커진다고 했다,

물과 달은 어느 대륙이든 다 하나로 통하지요

여자는 남편은 땅속에 묻혔고

부모님은 하늘의 별이 되었으니

러브 트라이앵글이 더 커졌다고 한다

바닷빛은 어느 날은 옥색이고 어느 날은 회색이니

사랑의 빛깔은 모른다고 하였다

노란 금작화들이 흐드러지게 타고 있었다

사랑의 풍선이 터지는 것을 많이 본

아몬드 빛 눈이었다
