Attempt To Preserve Native Tiger
IN an attempt to preserve the Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) from extinction, the president of the Taronga Zoological Park Trust (Mr. J. E. Hallstrom) has arrived in Tasmania to endeavour to obtain a pair for breeding purposes. With the thought that unless steps are taken to privately breed the thylacine it will eventually become extinct, the trustees hope to co-operate with Tasmanian authorities by offering their special breeding facilities at Taronga Park, Sydney, where a wide range of rare animals and birds are successfully bred each year. A fine colony of koalas has been produced at Taronga Park during the past few years, and the latest triumph was a fine young giraffe. A permit has been issued by the Animals and Birds’ Protection Board of Tasmania and Mr. Hallstrom proposes to commence operations on the West Coast.
