Radio National's Poetica programme is running a special feature this Saturday on young poets living in regional Australia.
Other forthcoming Poetica programmes worth keeping an ear out for include the show on 'the future,' which highlights work by Phil Norton (for whom “The Future stopped wearing a helmet ages ago”), Dorothy Porter and Anthony Lawrence, as well as December's show on the Australian Poetry Festival, which features Geoff Page, Rebecca Edwards, Peter Goldsworthy, Jan Owen, Ian McBryde, Jayne Fenton-Keane, James Charlton, Bronwyn Lea and Peter Boyle.
Poetry International Web.
Poetry International Web is a brand new site featuring “hundreds of poems by acclaimed modern poets from all around the world, both in the original language and in English translation,” as well as articles, interviews, reviews and so on. Although some aspects (the Australian section, for example, has only one poet in it so far) are yet to be fully realised, the projected scope of the site is impressive. In particular, the ongoing Camera Poetica project showcases a number of short films of poets reading their own work.
The Defence of Poetry series also makes for interesting reading, providing an “ever growing series of essays which offer challenging, provocative, impassioned and often contradictory views on the the nature, relevance and uses of poetry, or the lack thereof.” And this article on Poetry on the Internet: An Antidote to the Marketplace presents a persuasive and optimistic case for online poetry publishing.
