Cordite vs King Kong

17 June 2004

No, we're not talking about the upcoming Peter Jackson remake of the 1933 film about that pesky ape who just can't keep his paws off Fay Wray. We're talking about Melbourne's Fairfax newspaper, The Age.

On Tuesday this week The Age ran a story on poet Joel Deane. Deane, you may recall, is featured in our current Roots issue. The article itself, clearly based on a straightforward Google search, was mainly concerned with Deane's career as a speechwriter.

What was more interesting was The Age's decision to run both an Internet and a print version of the story, with only the latter featuring Deane's poem King Kong, which was published here on the Cordite site six weeks ago.

While we have no problem with authors seeking to republish their own poems after publication in Cordite (a quick glance at our copyright statement demonstrates that copyright, as is the usual practice, reverts to the author upon publication), we do have a problem with a large media organisation such as The Age failing to acknowledge the original source of the poem.

We have written to the Editor of The Age seeking just such an acknowledgement. We'll let you know if and when we receive a response.
